Teddy’s notable stand up career began in 1988 where shortly thereafter he won the Arsenio Hall Comedy Competition and the Funniest Man in DC competition as an amateur comic. There was no doubt that Teddy was on the path to comedic success.
In 1990, he performed as a professional act before the toughest audience in the world of entertainment, the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY. It was this performance where he cemented his name on the list of rising stars in American entertainment. In the landmark building where legends are made, Teddy received the prestigious and hard to come by standing ovation.
His Apollo performance set the path for a performance with the late Robin Harris at the Comedy Act Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. In 1991, the country took notice of Teddy’s comedic genius as a featured guest comedian on Russell Simmons’s Def Comedy Jam. His performance is one of the highest rated performances to this date. Once again, an outstanding performance led the way for another opportunity. Shortly after, Teddy appeared as a guest comedian on the first Def Comedy Jam All-Star video, featuring Eddie Griffin.
With his Apollo and Def Jam performances on the minds of many, Teddy began touring the country where he performed in such venues as the Fox Theater, the Chicago Theatre, Constitution Hall, Houston Arena, and Madam Walker, to name a few. In addition, he had side-splitting performances in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. During that time, Teddy shared billing with such names as Bernie Mac, D.L. Hughley, Steve Harvey, Cheryl Underwood, Arnez J, Earthquake and Adele Givens. In addition to his work with some of the best known comics in the country, Teddy has been the opening act for some of the best known names in the music industry. He opened for The Rick James and Tina Marie 20 Year Reunion Tour, The Isley Brothers, The Whispers, Bell Biv Devoe, R Kelly, and the late diva, Phyllis Hyman.
In 1995, the world of television came calling where he hosted his own TV Show called, “In The Dark with Teddy Carpenter”, produced by Tribune Entertainment. He later had a recurring guest role on the late night show, “Later”, which aired on NBC. Teddy also made appearances on the network sitcoms, “Boy Meets World” and “The Hughleys”, produced by Chris Rock.
In 1998, Teddy headlined eight shows at the well-known Aspen Comedy Fest where he impressed some of Hollywood’s most influential decision makers.
Born of his own stand-up material over the years, Teddy wrote the hilarious screenplay, “Slightly Touched”, in 2000. Shortly thereafter, one of his lifelong ambitions became a reality when he opened Teddy’s House of Comedy in Washington, DC. With the release of “Up Front with Teddy Carpenter”, he produced his first independently produced DVD currently available on the Internet at www.teddyshouseofcomedy.com.
Teddy will return to BET in 2004, where he will be the Executive Producer of his own one-hour comedy special airing in April.
